RENTON, Wash. – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has released the Executive Board Action taken during the March 18-19 Executive Board Meeting. The full list of action taken can be seen on the WIAA Website HERE.
The Executive Board approved changes to the basketball RPI in place to seed teams in the State Basketball Tournament, as recommended by the RPI Committee.
The RPI will now include the record of out-of-state opponents in the formula. Schools will be required to track the records of its out-of-state opponents throughout the season to maintain accurate standings.
The RPI will also count postseason games, including league and district tournaments before the final rankings are locked prior to the Regional round of the State Tournament.
Finally, Australian touring teams will no longer impact the RPI, as those teams will be counted as non-varsity opponents and the games will not be factored into the formula.
The Board also approved Safeco Field as the host site for the 2017 3A, 4A Baseball Championships, May 26-27. The home of the Seattle Mariners will field the semifinals and finals of the two classifications for the first time since 2010.
The Board selected Marty Fortin as the recipient of the Curt and Chee Chee Bruskland Award. Fortin has dedicated his time as the WIAA Mat Classic Tournament Director in addition to providing assistance to schools across the state in monitoring their ASB and Booster clubs. He will receive the award during the WIAA Coaches’ School, July 28-29.
