WIAA Announces Scholastic Cup Champions

RENTON, WA (Wednesday, June 9, 2010) – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association is proud to announce the Scholastic Cup champions for 2009-10.  The Scholastic Cup is the WIAA’s most prestigious annual school award.

The Scholastic Cup championship competition is a year-long program designed by the WIAA and is awarded to the top school in each of the six WIAA classifications.  The Scholastic Cup is emblematic of the top interscholastic programs in Washington that display excellence in academics, sportsmanship and athletic performances throughout the school year.

Here are the six winners of the Scholastic Cup:

Classification School Points
4A Mead  1405
3A  Mercer Island  1910
2A  Archbishop Murphy  1520
1A  King's  1485
2B  Bear Creek  1740
1B Mount Rainier Lutheran 1025

This is the third year in a row that Mead and King’s have won the Scholastic Cup and the second year in a row for Mercer Island and Bear Creek.

Please visit the WIAA Web site to view the final results of the 2009-10 Scholastic Cup and to view an audit of each school’s point totals.

The Scholastic Cup is awarded to the schools that compile the highest Scholastic Cup points based on their participation and finish at the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Championships.  The top eight schools in each of the WIAA Academic State Championship categories and classifications also receive Scholastic Cup points.

In an ongoing effort to promote sportsmanship, the Association incorporates a sportsmanship component into the Scholastic Cup award.  Schools receive Scholastic Cup points for displaying outstanding sportsmanship throughout the school year.  Schools with no more than one student or coach ejection in all varsity sports for the school year receive 25 Scholastic Cup points.  Schools lose points on a progressive basis for the second, third and fourth varsity player or coach ejection throughout the year. Schools with five or more ejections are disqualified from the Scholastic Cup competition.  All sportsmanship points are added or deducted after the conclusion of the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Spring State Championships.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association exists to assist member schools in operating student programs that foster achievement, respect, equity, enthusiasm and excellence in a safe and organized environment.
