WIAA Executive Board, Representative Assembly Meet
4/23/2010

Annual Meeting to Discuss Proposed Amendments

RENTON, WA (Friday, April 23, 2010) – The WIAA Executive Board concluded its April meeting today, Friday, April 23, 2010.

The Executive Board voted to restructure the state basketball tournament format beginning with the 2010-11 school year.  Under the new format, 16 teams from each classification will compete in the first round at regional sites February 25-26.  From this round, eight teams will advance to a state site for the second, third and fourth rounds of the tournament March 3-5.  There will be three state championship sites, with two classifications at each site.  Sites and classification distribution have yet to be determined.  The second, third and fourth rounds will be a modified double elimination format.

The Executive Board minutes, summary and agenda from the April meeting will be available on the WIAA Web site.

Five proposed amendments were approved by the WIAA Representative Assembly at its annual meeting on Friday, April 23, 2010 at the Spirit of Washington Event Center in Renton.  The Assembly, comprised of school personnel from around the state, meets annually for the purpose of voting on proposed amendments to the WIAA Handbook.  An amendment must receive a 60% majority approval to be ratified.

While there was a healthy discussion on adding lacrosse as a sanctioned sport, the financial impact on the member schools dissuaded voters and the amendment did not pass.

Below is a summary of the approved amendments that take effect beginning with the fall 2010 season.

RULE  SUMMARY
HS #5 17.5.0  August 1 out-of-season date will automatically be waived in specific situations
