The WIAA is pleased to announce Ochoa Middle School’s Jamie Townsend and Jenkins Junior High’s Natalie George as the September “Give Me 5” Star Students of the Month.
Jamie Townsend is an eighth grader at Ochoa Middle School in Pasco, Wash. He participates in football, basketball, track and is a part of the school’s student leadership group which organizes assemblies, activities and community projects.
Last season, Townsend battled through an injury during the basketball season. He didn’t let that stop him from contributing though, cheering on his team while rehabilitating from his injury. On the football field, he is a true leader and motivator and head coach Oscar Murguia said Townsend serves as another coach on the field when he is in the game.
In the classroom, Townsend holds a 3.95 GPA and has integrated into the Ellen Ochoa community seamlessly since moving to a new town last year. The school’s Athletic Director, Carolynn Jones, said that Townsend’s positive attitude and character has helped make him a successful student.
“Our favorite characteristic of Jamie is his confidence,” Jones said. “Jamie has had some tough times in and out of school and sports but he is confident in himself and no matter what is thrown at him he rises and overcomes the issue.”
Natalie George is an eighth grader at Jenkins Junior High School in Chewelah, Wash. She participates in cross country, volleyball, basketball and track while also serving as the ASB President.
George keeps a busy schedule. Not only does she play four sports, but is a volunteer at a long term care facility and participates in Stage Time Theater. Jenkins Athletic Director Rocky Verbeck says George’s sense of humor and personality makes her a pleasure to work with.
“She excels in sports, but more importantly she excels in school and her academic performance is of the utmost importance to her,” said English Teacher Maddie Kernan. “Natalie considers the well-being of others in all of her decisions, both on and off the field, and is a positive role model for those around her.”
