The Scholastic Cup is the WIAA’s most prestigious annual school award. The year-long competition recognizes the top school in each of the six WIAA classifications based on academic, athletic and sportsmanship excellence. Points are awarded by a school’s finish in each of the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Championships and Academic State Championships.

Northwest Christian (Colbert) won its third Scholastic Cup in a row with the highest score of any of the 2016-17 Champions, accruing 1,720 points. The boys track and field team won a State Championship while the school produced seven Academic State Champions at the 2B Level: band, choir, boys cross country, drama, football, softball and boys track and field. Northwest Christian now has won a total of four Scholastic Cups.

Interlake won the 3A classification with 1,555 points while Sehome continued its stranglehold at the 2A classification with its third-straight win and a total of 1,490 points. The results marked the first Scholastic Cup for Interlake and the sixth overall for Sehome.

Interlake finished as runners up in boys cross country, girls golf and girls tennis but won state academic awards in five athletic or activity categories. Sehome was propelled by the girls track team which won both a state championship as well as being crowned academic state champions. The boys’ cross country and tennis teams secured first-place finishes while gymnastics and dance/drill were academic state champions as well.

Mead climbed back to the top of the 4A standings with a total of 1,355 points, displacing four-time champion Newport (Bellevue). The Scholastic Cup win is the sixth for Mead, tying the Panthers with Sehome for the fourth most all time. Mead won the boys track and field state championship while winning academic championships in dance/drill, forensics and orchestra.

Freeman captured the 1A title in a close race with 1,175 points, while Almira Coulee Hartline became 1B champions with 1,010 points. The wins are the first in each school’s history after ACH had accumulated two previous top-five finishes and Freeman had one previous top-five finish. Freeman racked up points after academic championships in baseball, girls basketball, football and volleyball while the boys basketball team finished second on the court. ACH also won without a state championship, although both the boys and girls basketball teams finished as runners up. However, the Warriors won academic championships in baseball, volleyball and boys wrestling.
