The WIAA is pleased to announce Jenkins Junior High’s Lukas Kubik and Orting Middle School’s Bailey Ferguson as the June “Give Me 5” Star Students of the Month.

Lukas Kubik is an eighth grader at Jenkins Junior High in Chewelah, Wash. He participates in basketball, cross country, and track and field, and is planning on being a part of FFA in high school this upcoming fall.
Kubik is described as a positive student and athlete, who is able to lift up the people around him. Jenkins is a combined middle and high school, and Kubik is known and respected by seventh graders and seniors alike.
Kubik excels in the classroom by working hard, taking pride in completing assignments and doing them correctly. He sets examples in his study habits by getting his work done in order to help others when allowed.
Rocky Verbeck, Jenkins’ Athletic Director, said Kubik simply “makes those around him better."
“Lukas is a tremendous classmate and teammate. He is polite, courteous and maintains a 3.5 GPA. Lukas is respected not only in his grade level but adults also respect him.”
 | Bailey Ferguson is an eighth grader at Orting Middle School in Orting, Wash. She is a multi-sport athlete participating in basketball, softball, soccer and volleyball. Ferguson has also spent time in Orting’s associated student body, representing and advocating for her 6th and 7th grade peers.
Ferguson is involved with reading to students at local elementary schools, the National Junior Honor Society, leading ASB activities like Orting’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. assembly, tutoring peers in math during intervention and volunteering to serve veterans at the school’s Veteran's Day Brunch.
Athletic Director Karin Buchholz describes Ferguson as a forward thinker, leader and advocate for all students at Orting, not just the student-athletes.
“Her impact can be felt everywhere in OMS from the classroom to an assembly where she commands the audience,” Buchholz said. “She helped select the theme for this year’s MLK Jr. activities and advocated strongly that the history of slavery be included to help deepen the school-wide understanding of the impact of the Civil Rights Movement.”
The students will be featured on the Activities Matter and the Middle Level websites. The monthly campaign is dedicated to highlighting two middle school students that demonstrate the core principles of the program: honor, sportsmanship, courage, respect, and citizenship. |
