Basketball RPI Rankings Finalized
2/13/2017
RENTON, Wash. – The WIAA's inaugural basketball RPI was finalized Monday, Feb. 13 following a review period which allowed coaches and athletic directors to confirm their regular-season schedules. These rankings, as currently shown on WIAA.com, will seed the Hardwood Classic after schools qualify through their District Tournaments.
“The Executive Board and WIAA staff thank all the athletic directors and basketball coaches for their diligence in regard to score entry,” said WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese. “Without their dedication this kind of seeding tool would not be possible, which I believe is a step toward improving a great tournament.”
The RPI goes hand-in-hand with the new Hardwood Classic format where 16 teams per classification will play at regional sites on Friday or Saturday of week one (Feb. 24-25). Four games involving the top eight seeds based on RPI rankings will be played with the winner advancing to the second round at the Championship site with a bye, while the losing team will still advance to the first round at the Championship site.
The other four games involving seed Nos. 9-16 will be loser-out contests. Winners of those games will play the losers of the four games involving seed Nos. 1-8. Round 1 games of week two (March 1) will be single elimination and the tournament will continue with an eight-team modified double elimination format in rounds 2-4 (March 2-4) of week two. Six trophies will be awarded per gender per classification.
An example bracket of the new format can be found on WIAA.com.
