WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Boys State Soccer Tournament 2012

May 25-26, 2012

  • 1A, 2A  |  Sunset Chev Stadium, Sumner
  • 3A, 4A  |  Sparks Stadium, Puyallup

Back in November, 2011, Waitsburg-Prescott took home the 1B/2B Boys State Soccer Championship at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner. The other four classifications will battle it out on May 25-26, 2012 in Sumner and Puyallup for their State Championship titles. Two seasoned managers oversee both the Girls and Boys State Soccer Tournaments at the host venues.

Tim Thomsen is in his 10th consecutive year as the 1A, 2A Tournament Manager. He has also managed the 1B/2B Boys and Girls State Soccer Tournaments in the fall for ten years. Thomsen, the Athletic Director for the Sumner School District, is a graduate of Curtis High School (1975) and a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University (1980) where he played basketball. He has been at Sumner since 1980.  Prior to managing State Soccer, Thomsen was a Co-Director of State Golf.

Sunset Chev Stadium’s field is a full 70 yards wide, making it one of the widest stadium fields in the state. The main grandstand can accommodate fans from both schools and provides a great view of the playing field.  This summer, Sunset Chev is scheduled to receive new turf, a new track, and some other minor upgrades as part of a remodel project.

Carl Sparks Stadium, renovated in 2009-10, features covering on both sides, and an impressive sound system.  Rick Wells, Athletic Director for the Puyallup School District, will oversee the event as 3A, 4A Tournament Manager.  Wells has tallied up three years as Tournament Manager for State Soccer and 36 years in education as a teacher and administrator. Raised in the Puget Sound area, he is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University (BA) also and the University of Washington (MA).

For those fans who are unable to attend the games, the WIAA will be offering live interactive blogs for both of the State Soccer tournament sites.  Fans can access the blogs here:
