The WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires 2012 State Tennis Tournament participants start their action May 25-26, 2012 at four locations across the state. Four different Tournament Managers will supervise the individual sites.
Stephen Welt is the Tournament Manager for the 1B/2B/1A State Tournament. Welt grew up in London, England and is a graduate of Kilburn Polytechnic (1988). He shares a love for the sport of tennis similar to that of the participants and coaches.
“The best part of the State Tournament is seeing how passionate the coaches and players are about high school tennis,” Welt said.
Managing the 2A State Tournament is Colin Cushman, the Bellingham School District Athletic Director. This will be Cushman’s first year managing the event.
Don Schumacher will be celebrating his 10th year as the 3A State Tournament Manager. A native of Moscow, Idaho he attended the University of Idaho. Schumacher, the Athletic Director at Kamiakin HS, will be retiring at the end of the school year after working at Kamiakin HS for 33 years.
The 4A Tournament Manger, Mike Edwards, also manages the 3A, 4A State Baseball Tournament and 1A State Softball Tournament. He is a graduate of Cal State Northridge and Heritage University. He will oversee three different State Championship locations in the Tri-Cities making for a busy spring State Championship weekend.
An abundance of Pacific Northwest pride surrounds the management at these events. Each manager is committed to putting on a great event that matches the passion of those participating.
“The culmination of practices and matches come down to two days of competition,” Welt said.
Two days are all that stands between the participants and their dreams of capturing a trophy. Who will be this year’s Champions?
