WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Track and Field Meet 2012

May 25-26, 2012

A total of 48 team trophies are up for grabs at the 2012 the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Track and Field State Meets.  Two tournament managers will oversee three classifications each at host venues in Spokane and Tacoma.

Entering his 15th consecutive year as Tournament Manager, Jay Rydell will run the 1B, 2B, 1A State Meet at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. Rydell is a Montana native and a graduate of Great Falls Public High School (1961). He participated in football, wrestling, and track in high school and continued all three sports at Dana College (Blair, NE). He received his teaching degree at Western Montana College (Dillon, MT) and a Masters in Administration at Whitworth College (Spokane, Wash.). Mike Van Matre has been Rydell’s assistant for three years at this event. Dave Cook, Sports Information Director (Eastern Washington University) started the State Meet 17 years ago with longtime coach Jerry Martin. Cook does all of the athlete entries for the event. It is a community-based event in terms of staff and those attending.

“The fans that support their athletes and communities come out in full force.” Said Rydell of the 1B, 2B, 1A State Track and Field Meet.

Jennifer Kubista is the Tournament Manager for the fourth consecutive year at the 2A, 3A, 4A State Meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma, Wash. Kubista is a graduate of Wilson High School (Tacoma, Wash., 1993) followed by Gonzaga University (Spokane, Wash., 1997) where she played volleyball and received her BA in Business Administration. She moved to the East Coast to be an assistant volleyball coach at the University of Connecticut while she pursued a Masters in Education/Sport Management (1999). She has been involved in the Tacoma School District since moving back to Washington in 2001.  She received the Washington Secondary School Athletics Administrators Association (WSSAAA) 2011 Athletic Director of the Year Award. Kubista works alongside Bill Harris, Mike Taylor, and Bernadette Ray as part of her management team. Mount Tahoma HS hosts over 1,800 athletes, 500+ coaches, 300 officials and staff and several thousand spectators over a three-day period.

Both managers are hoping for warm weather at their respective locations as they prepare to hand out 88 total medals to the top four (1B) and top eight (2B, 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A) finishers of each event.  Good luck on the track, the runway, in the pit, or in the circle to all of our track and field participants reaching for new personal records!
