RENTON, Wash. – The WIAA Executive Board held its
April meeting on Sunday, April 17, and concluded Monday, April 18.
The most
anticipated topic was the state basketball format. After discussing the
Executive Board’s tournament format objectives and reviewing issues submitted
by fans, coaches and schools, the Board voted to continue the current system,
but elected to change the first round games played at local sites to a single
elimination format. The regional format will again be played on Friday Feb. 24
and Saturday, Feb. 25, the weekend prior to the final eight, with the boys
playing on Friday and the girls playing on Saturday (which will rotate every year). The single elimination
format will determine the eight teams that advance to the final site.
Similar to
last year, eight teams will advance to a state site for the second, third and
fourth rounds of the tournament March 1-3 for a modified double elimination
format. There will be three state
championship sites, with two classifications at each site.
In addition
to the basketball format change, the Executive Board approved the regional
baseball sites, which can be found HERE and took action on
the girls state soccer championships sites. The 1A and 2A classifications will move to Shoreline
Stadium, while the 3A and 4A classifications will play their state championship at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.
